I always seem to forget about Country Living Magazine but I happened to see it on the library shelves the other day and happily got myself reacquainted with this year's back issues. In the September Issue I discovered their 2012 House of the Year "Room to Spare" project. I am completely, madly in love with the rustic kitchen designed by architect Ruard Veltman and Top Chef Master Marcus Samuelsson. While the kitchen is pared down to the very basics to prevent this small space {250 square feet!} from feeling cluttered and confined it was given a significant boost in character by cladding the walls floor to ceiling in reclaimed barn board. This paired with the warm gray used on the cabinetry creates the "warm minimalist" aesthetic Ruard conceptualized.
I highly recommend watching the accompanying video tour of this smartly dressed gem. You'll see and learn much more than these photo stills can impart. And while you're there check out the other two Room to Spare cottages - the Guest Bedroom and Home Office are equally charming.
